Using our ESG data we analyzed the coverage that recent climate pledge announcements from Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft received. Money moves based on big tech’s climate pledges with research from EPFR show that ESG funds hold 2.3 billion worth of Microsoft stock and 1.1 billion worth of Apple stock.
Last week in our ESG Spotlight we used our NLP to highlight the positive coverage around big tech's climate pledges. While Microsoft made the first move in 2020, Apple set a new high this week for positive press coverage! Money moves based on these pledges with research from EPFR show that ESG funds hold 2.3 billion worth of Microsoft stock and 1.1 billion worth of Apple stock.
Last week we saw Apple extend their carbon neutral commitment to include their supply chain and product life cycle emissions by 2030. Microsoft also gave a six-month update on their Net Zero journey announcing a new coalition to lead the way towards a climate-stable future. These announcements follow Amazon's June pledge to launch a 2B fund to invest in climate technologies.
This means it's critically important to analyze these pledges and make sure we see follow through. While it is very good to see Apple consider their supply chain as they work to cut emissions by 75%, it's important to still track their efforts to cut down on e-waste and stop planned obsolescence. Similarly Amazon's investment is impressive, but despite their green pledges Amazon's carbon footprint grew by 15 percent last year.
The competition for climate leadership is important and should serve to enforce these pledges, but at Amenity Analytics we'll continue to track these companies either way. Expect a follow up in a few months!
