Why Packaged ESG Data Sets Leave Investors Exposed.

Most investors rely on ESG data sets that update quarterly or annually, missing important real-time cues that alert them to important changes in the ESG landscape. Commercial ESG data sets are all “programmed” the same way – serving up data organized into hard-wired frameworks that were designed ages ago, with a bias towards illuminating risk, not identifying opportunities.

In our latest webinar, we were joined by Jean Rogers, Founder of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and one of the world’s leading ESG experts, and Bruno Bertocci, Managing Director of the Sustainable Equity Investors Team at UBS Asset Management. They discussed why it’s crucial for the analyst community to include next-generation ESG data and second-order information as part of an effective investment strategy.

Here are some important points that were covered:

  • The Power of Fluid Datasets. For ESG investors to have an impact, they must have an intentional and active strategy that doesn’t rely on stale ESG data to support it.
  • Commercial ESG Data Sets Are All “Programmed” the Same Way. They serve up data organized into hard-wired frameworks that were designed ages ago, with a bias towards illuminating risk, not identifying opportunities.
  • “Standardized” Data Can Be Found Lacking. The problem with efforts to “standardize” ESG data is the focus placed only on company specific risks. An effective investment strategy must be informed by many other factors.
  • Tailored Taxonomies Help Focus Strategy. AI and NLP can pull relevant text and themes used in context from unstructured narratives across the entire investable universe.
